I hang onto houseplants way too long. They are living things but living things have finite life spans and sooner or later assisted suicide is the right thing to do. One partially-brown leaf sticking out of an 8-inch pot isn’t a cheery thing to come home to and the plant, if this is possible, is probably signaling to whomever to put it out of its misery.
